Quick answer: which weight rating should you check?

GVWR limits the loaded weight of the tow vehicle itself. GCWR limits the combined loaded weight of the tow vehicle and trailer. GAWR limits the load carried by a particular axle, usually the front or rear axle. You may need to satisfy all three at the same time.

For a towing calculation, use GVWR to check the truck or SUV’s total weight, GCWR to check the combined rig, and GAWR to check how weight is distributed across the axles. Also verify the trailer hitch, tires, wheels, brakes, receiver, and the vehicle manufacturer’s stated towing limit. The lowest applicable limit controls.

What GVWR means

GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. It is the maximum allowable weight of the tow vehicle when loaded. That loaded vehicle can include the driver, passengers, fuel, tools, cargo, accessories, hitch equipment, and the portion of trailer weight carried through the hitch.

GVWR is not the vehicle’s curb weight and is not the maximum trailer weight. It applies only to the tow vehicle. The rating is normally shown on the certification label attached to the driver-side doorjamb or door pillar. The owner’s manual may also list it.

A basic GVWR check is:

Actual tow-vehicle weight ≤ GVWR

To estimate the available capacity before loading:

Available payload = GVWR − actual empty or curb weight

However, a published payload figure may use a particular vehicle configuration and may not match the vehicle sitting in your driveway. Optional equipment, a larger cab, four-wheel drive, aftermarket accessories, passengers, and cargo can reduce the remaining capacity.

What GCWR means

GCWR stands for Gross Combined Weight Rating. It is the maximum allowable weight of the loaded tow vehicle and loaded trailer together. In some manufacturer materials, the term may appear as gross combination weight rating.

A GCWR check is:

Actual tow-vehicle weight + actual trailer weight ≤ GCWR

Trailer weight means the trailer as it is used, including cargo, water, propane, batteries, personal items, and equipment. Do not use an empty trailer weight if you intend to tow it loaded.

GCWR is the rating to check when asking whether the entire combination is too heavy for the vehicle’s powertrain, cooling system, transmission, frame, brakes, and other systems considered by the manufacturer. It is not calculated by adding GVWR and the trailer’s maximum rating. It is a manufacturer-established limit for a specific vehicle configuration, engine, axle ratio, transmission, drivetrain, and equipment package.

Using GCWR to estimate a trailer limit

If you know the tow vehicle’s actual loaded weight, you can calculate the remaining combined-weight allowance:

Remaining combination allowance = GCWR − actual tow-vehicle weight

That result is only a preliminary trailer-weight limit. The actual allowable trailer weight may be lower because of the vehicle’s published maximum trailer rating, hitch rating, tongue-weight limit, payload, GAWR, tire ratings, or other restrictions.

For a hypothetical example, suppose a loaded tow vehicle weighs 6,000 pounds and its verified GCWR is 11,000 pounds. The arithmetic leaves 5,000 pounds for the loaded trailer. If the receiver, payload calculation, axle ratings, or manufacturer towing table allows less, the lower value must be used.

What GAWR means

GAWR stands for Gross Axle Weight Rating. It is the maximum allowable weight supported by one axle and its associated tires, wheels, suspension, and related components. Vehicles commonly have a front GAWR and a rear GAWR.

GAWR is not the maximum weight of the entire vehicle. It applies separately to each axle:

  • Front axle check: actual front-axle weight ≤ front GAWR
  • Rear axle check: actual rear-axle weight ≤ rear GAWR

The front and rear GAWR values may appear on the certification label. Tire and loading information labels also provide important tire-load information, but the tire rating and GAWR are not interchangeable. The allowable load at an axle must not exceed the lowest applicable rating for the axle, tires, wheels, suspension, and related components.

Why the rear GAWR matters during towing

Trailer tongue weight is carried at the hitch, which is usually behind the rear axle. That adds load to the rear axle and can remove some load from the front axle. A weight-distribution hitch can transfer some load toward the front axle and trailer axles, but it does not make payload disappear and does not automatically increase GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, or the hitch’s rated limits.

A rear-axle check is especially important when carrying heavy bed cargo, passengers behind the front seats, a camper, a large fuel tank, or a high tongue-weight trailer. A vehicle can be below its total GVWR while still exceeding its rear GAWR.

Passing one check does not prove that the entire setup is within limits. For example, a trailer may be within the GCWR calculation but exceed the tow vehicle’s payload because its tongue weight is too high. Conversely, a tow vehicle may have enough payload for the tongue weight but exceed GCWR once the trailer is fully loaded.

A practical towing calculation

  1. Identify the ratings for the exact vehicle. Use the door label, owner’s manual, manufacturer towing guide, and hitch documentation. Confirm engine, transmission, drivetrain, cab, axle ratio, wheelbase, and package details where applicable.
  2. Weigh the tow vehicle as it will be used. Include occupants, fuel, cargo, accessories, hitch hardware, and any load in the bed or cabin. A certified public scale can provide total and axle weights.
  3. Weigh or calculate the fully loaded trailer. Include all cargo and fluids. Do not rely only on the trailer’s empty or dry weight.
  4. Check GVWR. Confirm the loaded tow vehicle is not over its GVWR.
  5. Check GCWR. Add the actual loaded tow-vehicle weight and actual loaded-trailer weight. Confirm the result is within GCWR.
  6. Check both GAWR values. Obtain front and rear axle weights and compare each with its corresponding GAWR.
  7. Check tongue weight and payload. The tongue weight must fit within the remaining tow-vehicle payload and the hitch’s tongue-weight rating. Follow the trailer and vehicle manufacturer’s guidance for proper tongue-weight distribution.
  8. Check equipment-specific limits. Verify the receiver, ball mount, ball, safety chains, tires, wheels, trailer axle, trailer brakes, wiring, and any weight-distribution system.

Example: why trailer weight alone is not enough

Consider a hypothetical SUV with 1,400 pounds of available payload after accounting for its actual curb weight. The occupants, luggage, accessories, and hitch equipment total 800 pounds. That leaves 600 pounds for trailer tongue weight before reaching GVWR.

If the loaded trailer places 700 pounds on the hitch, the SUV is over its remaining payload even if the trailer’s total weight appears to be within the published towing limit. The owner would need to reduce cargo, reduce tongue weight through proper trailer loading if permitted, use a more capable vehicle, or choose a lighter trailer. The trailer must still pass the GCWR, rear GAWR, receiver, tire, and brake checks.

Now consider a different problem: the tow vehicle and trailer together are within GCWR, but the rear axle is over its GAWR because of a heavy tongue, bed load, and passengers. The combination is still not acceptable. GAWR is an independent limit.

GVWR, curb weight, payload, and towing capacity

Curb weight is the weight of a vehicle in a specified ready-to-operate condition, but the exact definition can vary by source and equipment. It generally does not represent your vehicle with every passenger, accessory, and piece of cargo included.

Payload is the weight the vehicle can carry. A common theoretical calculation is GVWR minus curb weight, but real-world available payload should be based on the vehicle’s actual weight and the manufacturer’s information. The doorjamb tire-and-loading label may provide a more useful statement of how much combined weight of occupants and cargo the vehicle can carry.

Towing capacity is the manufacturer’s maximum trailer weight for a particular configuration and operating conditions. It is not simply GCWR minus a brochure curb weight. Your actual occupants, cargo, tongue weight, equipment, terrain, temperature, altitude, and trailer loading affect the practical result.

Factors that can reduce practical capacity

  • Passengers, cargo, fuel, and aftermarket equipment
  • A heavier trailer load than its advertised empty weight
  • High tongue weight or poor trailer loading
  • Steep grades, high altitude, heat, and headwinds
  • Long downhill sections and demanding stop-and-go traffic
  • Inadequate trailer brakes or improperly adjusted brakes
  • Underrated tires, wheels, hitch components, or suspension parts
  • Using a weight-distribution hitch when it is not required, approved, or correctly adjusted

Some manufacturers publish special conditions, speed limits, frontal-area restrictions, or reduced ratings for certain configurations. Those instructions take precedence over a general towing table.

  • Using GVWR as towing capacity: GVWR is the loaded vehicle limit, not the trailer limit.
  • Checking only GCWR: A combination can pass GCWR and fail payload, GAWR, hitch, tire, or brake limits.

Then consult the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s towing guide for GCWR, maximum trailer weight, maximum tongue weight, required equipment, and configuration-specific conditions.

For an accurate loaded setup, use a certified scale. Weigh the tow vehicle and trailer together, then obtain individual front-axle, rear-axle, and trailer-axle weights when possible. Reweigh after moving cargo or changing the trailer load. Keep the scale tickets and compare every result with the applicable rating.
