You usually need more than the trailer’s advertised dry weight, but you do not necessarily need the biggest tow rating available. The right vehicle is the one that can handle the trailer’s fully loaded weight, tongue weight, passengers, cargo, and terrain without exceeding its tow rating, payload rating, axle ratings, or gross combined weight rating.

Start by identifying the trailer’s realistic loaded weight. Then check the vehicle’s specific tow rating and payload on the door-jamb label, window sticker, owner’s manual, or manufacturer towing guide. A brochure maximum is only valid for a particular engine, transmission, axle ratio, cab or body style, drivetrain, and tow-package configuration.

The Numbers That Determine Whether a Vehicle Can Tow

Tow rating

The tow rating is the maximum trailer weight a vehicle is rated to pull under specified conditions. It is often the number shoppers notice first, but it is not the only limit. The rating may assume a nearly empty vehicle, a specific hitch setup, a certain number of occupants, and compliance with other limits.

Never treat a model line’s highest advertised rating as applying to every version. A compact SUV, half-ton pickup, heavy-duty pickup, and full-size van can have very different ratings within the same brand. Verify the rating for the exact vehicle identification number or configuration whenever possible.

Payload

Payload is the weight the vehicle can carry, including people, luggage, accessories, cargo in the bed or cabin, and the trailer’s tongue weight. It is often the real limiter when towing a travel trailer or car trailer.

For example, a vehicle with a 1,500-pound payload rating does not have 1,500 pounds available for trailer tongue weight. If passengers and cargo weigh 500 pounds, only about 1,000 pounds remains before considering the tongue weight. A heavy weight-distributing hitch, bed cap, toolbox, auxiliary fuel tank, and aftermarket equipment also consume payload.

Find the yellow or white certification label on the driver-side door area. It commonly states the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed a specified amount. Use that vehicle-specific figure instead of a generic payload number from an advertisement.

GVWR, GAWR, and GCWR

  • GVWR: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or the maximum legal and engineering-rated weight of the tow vehicle when loaded.
  • GAWR: Gross Axle Weight Rating, the maximum permitted load on each axle. Rear axle capacity matters particularly when tongue weight is carried behind the rear axle.
  • GCWR: Gross Combined Weight Rating, the maximum combined weight of the loaded vehicle and loaded trailer.
  • Hitch rating: The maximum trailer and tongue weight allowed by the receiver, ball mount, or factory hitch in a given configuration.

All of these limits matter. A vehicle may have enough engine power to move a trailer but still exceed its payload, rear-axle, hitch, or combined-weight rating.

Calculate the Trailer’s Real Towing Weight

Do not base your decision only on dry weight or shipping weight. Those figures may exclude water, propane, batteries, food, tools, camping equipment, personal items, and dealer-installed options. A trailer’s GVWR is its maximum permitted loaded weight and is a useful upper-bound planning figure.

  1. Find the trailer’s certified unloaded weight and GVWR on its certification label or paperwork.
  2. Add the equipment, water, fuel, batteries, propane, cargo, and accessories you expect to carry.
  3. Use a public scale to weigh the loaded trailer and tow vehicle if possible.
  4. Check tongue weight and axle weights, not just the total trailer weight.

For a conventional bumper-pull trailer, a loaded tongue weight around 10% to 15% of trailer weight is a common planning range. The correct percentage depends on the trailer design and loading, so follow the trailer manufacturer’s guidance. Too little tongue weight can contribute to sway; too much can overload the tow vehicle’s rear axle, tires, suspension, or hitch.

Fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers place a larger share of their weight in the truck bed. Their pin or kingpin weight can commonly be in the mid-teens to roughly 25% of loaded trailer weight, depending on the design and loading. That weight is payload, not a free addition to the truck’s tow rating. Use the truck’s rear-axle, tire, bed, hitch, and payload limits when evaluating these trailers.

Practical Towing-Capacity Decision Rules

For small utility trailers and light boats

Many compact cars, crossovers, and small SUVs can handle modest utility trailers, personal watercraft, small boats, or lightweight garden equipment when properly equipped. The limiting factors may be the hitch class, tongue-weight rating, trailer brakes, and the vehicle’s payload rather than the advertised maximum trailer rating.

Keep the load balanced, secure it properly, and confirm that the vehicle is approved for towing. Some vehicles have a tow rating only when fitted with a factory or approved aftermarket hitch and wiring.

For campers and enclosed trailers

Travel trailers often become substantially heavier when ready for a trip. If the trailer’s loaded weight is near the vehicle’s maximum tow rating, handling, braking, acceleration, cooling, and grade performance may be demanding even if the combination is technically within the rating.

A useful shopping rule is to avoid selecting a trailer solely because its dry weight fits. Compare the vehicle’s available payload with the expected tongue weight plus every occupant and item carried in the vehicle. For frequent mountain travel, hot climates, long highway trips, or extensive cargo, choose a larger margin rather than operating at the limit.

For car haulers and equipment trailers

Estimate the weight of the trailer, the car or equipment, spare tires, ramps, tools, fuel, and tiedown gear. A steel car trailer and a heavy vehicle can quickly use the capacity of a half-ton pickup or large SUV. An aluminum trailer may reduce weight, but it does not eliminate the need to verify payload, tongue weight, brakes, and axle ratings.

Moving a heavy load behind a shorter-wheelbase vehicle can also affect stability. A longer-wheelbase pickup, SUV, or van may provide more predictable control, especially with a tall enclosed trailer or a trailer exposed to crosswinds.

How Much Extra Capacity Should You Leave?

There is no universal legally required “extra percentage” that makes a setup safe. However, buying or operating right at the maximum leaves little room for passengers, cargo, weather, road grades, trailer loading changes, or scale inaccuracies. A practical approach is to keep the expected loaded combination comfortably below the vehicle’s ratings and avoid routinely towing at the maximum brochure figure.

Do not use an arbitrary cushion to override a rating. If the loaded trailer exceeds the tow rating, or if the vehicle exceeds payload, GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, hitch, or tire limits, the combination is not made acceptable by driving slowly. Move to a more capable vehicle, reduce the load, or use a lighter trailer.

Why the Tow Package Matters

A tow package may include more than a receiver hitch. Depending on the vehicle, it can add a trailer wiring connector, higher-capacity alternator, engine or transmission cooling, a stronger hitch, trailer-brake wiring, a larger battery, different axle gearing, upgraded suspension, tow mirrors, or integrated trailer-brake controls. Tow/haul mode can alter shift strategy and engine-braking behavior, but it does not increase the vehicle’s ratings.

Do not assume an aftermarket receiver creates the same capability as a factory tow package. Check the receiver label, wiring, cooling requirements, brake-controller compatibility, and the owner’s manual. Some vehicles require a specific equipment package before a trailer rating applies.

Brakes, Tires, and Stability Are Part of Capacity

Trailer capacity is not just an engine-power question. Confirm that the trailer has properly adjusted brakes where required, and use a compatible brake controller for electric trailer brakes. Inspect the tow vehicle and trailer tires for load rating, inflation, age, and condition. Inflate them according to the applicable vehicle or trailer labels, not by guesswork.

Use the correct ball size and rated mount, attach safety chains, connect the breakaway cable, and verify all lights before departure. Load heavy items low and close to the trailer’s axle while maintaining the manufacturer’s recommended tongue weight. A weight-distribution hitch can help some conventional trailers, but it does not increase the vehicle’s GVWR, rear-axle rating, or maximum tow rating.

  • How much do passengers, cargo, accessories, and hitch equipment weigh?
  • Does available payload cover all of that weight?

  • Does this exact vehicle have the required factory tow package or approved equipment?
  • Will the combination handle your highway speeds, grades, heat, wind, and trip length with a reasonable margin?
