Loaded trailer weight = empty trailer weight + cargo + fluids + propane + batteries + accessories

Dry or unloaded weight is often less than the trailer weighs when ready to travel. A travel trailer may gain substantial weight from water, food, tools, clothing, camping equipment, and optional equipment. A utility trailer's load may change from one trip to the next.

The most reliable method is to weigh the trailer and tow vehicle at a certified public scale. Weigh the combination as it will travel, with passengers, cargo, fuel, and equipment aboard. For example, if a hypothetical vehicle and hitch combination is rated for 10,000 pounds and the measured trailer weighs 8,500 pounds, the nominal trailer-weight margin is 1,500 pounds, or 15 percent.
