Full-size body-on-frame SUVs

Heavy-duty SUVs

Heavy-duty SUVs, where available, are the next step when you need substantial trailer capacity and maximum stability. They are based on heavy-duty pickup platforms and may have much higher ratings and payloads than ordinary full-size SUVs. These vehicles are larger, heavier, more expensive to operate, and less convenient in parking lots, but they are worth considering for frequent towing of large travel trailers, equipment trailers, or loaded car trailers.

Why the biggest tow number may not be the best choice

Maximum tow ratings are usually achieved with a carefully specified vehicle and a particular trailer setup.
